We design beautiful, functional spaces in which to dream, relax, work, laugh, dine,
and live your well-loved life. Lily Spindle is equal parts magician, therapist, artist, and sleuth -
our design alchemy thrives within this myriad mix.

We believe all rooms ought to have original art on their walls and espouse
the importance of the perfectly imperfect, embracing the individual distinction found
in furnishings, accessories, and art. We love vintage furniture, ingenuity, kindness, and
pets and feel living with furry friends should never, ever cramp your interior
design aesthetic.

Situated amongst the sycamores of Santa Monica Canyon, this mid-1980s modern home was, truthfully, stunning before Lily Spindle set foot in the door, though in need of a well-executed, subtle refresh. The homeowners’ existing art collection, vast and wonderful, created a foundation and philosophy we wholly understood and embraced. Repainting the den in a custom-tinted Roman Clay finish, incorporating a custom-built mahogany Bibliotheque-inspired bookshelf, and bringing a russet red strawberry hue to their dining room walls, we also revitalized their kitchen, using Farrow & Ball’s Purbeck Stone on the cabinet fronts, replacing the hardware with a more elegant shape and finish, and introducing texture and color with a pale blue staggered tile backsplash. Seizing on the power in paint, artfully-chosen colors, patterns and textiles, Lily Spindle delivered a dynamic 21st century reboot to this beautifully personal and idiosyncratic home.

Our clients’ Arts District urban loft was enviably cool in its location, scale, and views of Downtown Los Angeles, but it was undeniably gloomy and cavernous and as two creatives who work from home (sharing space with their two dogs), the open-concept floor plan had become especially challenging to thrive within. Though it seemed impossible to achieve privacy and autonomy without sacrificing the sunlight pouring through the single floor-to-ceiling window, we utilized custom-made frosted glass and oak pocket doors to create a quiet bedroom sanctuary while also inviting more natural light into the expanse of the loft. A completely new kitchen in a lively palette, new bathroom features, custom built-ins for appliances, and the addition of vintage furniture, new lighting, and colorful textiles, and it’s now an entirely rejuvenated mode of loft life.

This 1954 A. Quincy Jones house perfectly conveys the inimitable indoor-outdoor feel of California modernism, with its enormous walls of glass, tongue-and-groove vaulted ceilings, and dramatic angles of the gabled roof line. Like a brilliantly designed treehouse, there’s an ambient feeling of co-existing within the property’s ancient oak and sycamore trees and the home’s openness elicits an inexplicably magical calm. Our goal was honoring the ingenious Jones architecture and revering that wonderful, magical calm while bringing depth to its commodious white spaces. Plush and patterned rugs, indigo, cinnamon, teal, carmine, and forest green upholstery and textiles, a mix of vintage and custom furniture, striking photography, low-slung sofas - all chosen with a sense of each piece’s unique qualities and how it relates to the architecture itself. The media room conversion is like a modern-day sunken conversation pit, only decidedly moodier, sexier, and sophisticated. Jones was known for his desire to bring about “better living,” and this Pacific Palisades modernist haven is all about it.

Standing tall among the modest bungalows of Los Angeles’ westside, this contemporary two-story blockhouse attracted the new homeowners with its expansive rooms, modern appointments and abundance of light. But the ubiquitous white and “greige” palette reflected none of the ebullience of a young couple expecting their first child.  With the clock ticking down on month seven, we embarked on creating a warm and inviting nest for the burgeoning family that includes two feisty cats and a sweet pup.   As we happily embraced the client’s receptivity to bold color, the vast, generic spaces became intimate and interesting with the addition of patterned textiles, richly-hued rugs, vibrant paint and tile, new and vintage furniture, unique abstract art and perhaps the pièce de résistance, a whimsical, hand-painted mural in the lovingly-adorned nursery welcoming the newest family member to her now delightfully transformed home. The expansion of a 1939 Sunset Park bungalow in the sleepy, bucolic Santa Monica, California neighborhood transformed this once dark, disjointed home into a truly resplendent residence. Embracing the west-facing property’s sun-dappled exposure, the architects masterfully oriented the main hub of the home towards a newly constructed walk-out deck and the romantic, grandiose Chinese Flame tree, which inspired the clients to purchase the house years ago. Utilizing the powerful beauty of light and space, ceilings were raised and walls removed, all while retaining the home’s original single-story nature. We styled the entire residence with custom furniture, rugs, accessories, adding to the clients’ voluminous collection of incredible folk art paintings, photographs, and ceramics, and the result is an airy, gorgeous home that’s both inspiring and relaxing, intimate and extraordinary. (Architect: Addison Schierbeek; photography by Michele Thomas)

Sophisticated minimalism and livable comfort reign in this spacious mid-century modern dwelling, a busy family's homestead complete with a pack of adorable dogs and two active kids. Vibrant colors and patterns meander throughout, within the artwork, furniture, rugs, accessories, and textiles, and are balanced against the gorgeous, ubiquitous natural light and beauty of this one-story ranch at the foot of Los Feliz's Griffith Park. The inherent cheerfulness, joy, and casual Southern California cool of the home’s inhabitants deeply influenced the direction of our design, in all its aspects. (photography by Michele Thomas)

When a leaky pipe in an upstairs unit destroyed much of their cavernous galley kitchen, a long-desired remodel went from dream to reality for this acting-writing-directing couple in North Hollywood. Drawing aesthetically from the MCM vibe of their home, we energized and elevated the windowless workspace by eschewing heavy upper cabinets in favor of open shelving and integrating warm wood and dazzling white finishes with a broad stroke of a midcentury turquoise tile, global textiles, and distinctive lighting. A reimagined lively breakfast nook featuring an upholstered tangerine banquette transforms the once awkward and unused corner into the perfect spot to lounging with a latte in the morning or cocktails at night. Serenity abound in this 3,700-square-foot classic Spanish style home, nestled on a private drive in the North Arroyo neighborhood of charming, pastoral Pasadena. Accommodating a family of five, we sought to create a home with timeless textures, warm and inviting colors, and gorgeous, comfortable furniture, including modern and antique rugs, original art, and the occasional pop of an excellent graphic pattern. Illuminating and modernizing this casting director’s home was the ultimate aim, to raise the collectively somber master bedroom, dining room, living room, and kitchen to a place of inspiring radiance and brilliance. Cerulean and cerise now reign supreme in her spacious master bedroom, which she describes as an “oasis,” leading out to a sunny backyard patio and pool. A full remodel of her outdated living and dining rooms, as well as her kitchen, expanded the impassioned cook’s workspace while also providing a gorgeous central spot for her friends to snack and socialize. Opening up the very heart of the house, we introduced colorful vintage rugs, lighting, and accessories, custom locally made furniture, and modern Southern California-vibe photography by artist George Byrne. (photography by Michele Thomas)

We understand the emptiness of a new home can be both galvanizing and intimidating . . . and we fearlessly and unfailingly lean into the former. For this Culver City home, we designed the space with a strong predilection for sensual fabrics and unexpected colors. Lush velvets and silks, bold and pretty fuchsias, warm woods and metals, and feminine subtlety abound. (photography by Joe Atlas)

A bibliophile's utopia, this Mediterranean-style home built in 1926 is blessed with incredible architectural details, not to mention stunning panoramic views of Los Feliz and Silver Lake. With our addition of abstract art to the client's burgeoning collection, custom and vintage furniture and accessories, and textiles hailing from Morocco and Guatemala, we aimed to honor and complement the original elements of this writer's resplendent residence.
